This work began with an interest in the Matsutake mushroom. Matsutakes are harvested largely in Oregon, USA, and Yunnan, China. It cannot be cultivated artificially so Matsutake commodity trade relies on mushroom pickers. Matsutake pickers are mostly retired soldiers, people with disabilities and refugees. For them, some years, there could be enough Matsutake if the growing conditions fit, but some years there could be very few. Even though there are many, it's not certain that pickers can gather enough if they don't know where they are, or if the other pickers have already picked them all. So they live with this uncertainty. In this way, the mushroom trade is completely different from what we commonly think of as 'high productivity'; strong, healthy workers achieve maximum with minimum effect. In the Czech Republic, there is a composer named Vaclav Halek who wrote a book of music inspired by mushrooms. The artist filmed two Finnish musicians playing scores from this book. She tries to bring the stories surround mushroom with the sound.
